Hello,
I'm new to the board but have been doing dirtwork and rough cut mowing as a side business for about a year now. I currently have a L2800 HST w/ FEL, 5'box blade and 5'rough cut. Thankfully business is starting to pick up but so is my need for speed. I've been looking at the following Kubota 5040, the new grand L series, Kioti and JD. I love the tractor I've got but would really like to knock these jobs out as quickly as possible. A 50hp tractor seems like a good idea. Question is what's the best bang for the buck? I really like the HST trans but I'm not opposed to shuttle. Have all dealerships in my area except a Kioti dealer within 50 miles. I appreciate your input.
Thanks

Well, to start with, IMHO, tractor size & horsepower are NOT directly related to how fast you can "knock off" a particular job.

In a lot of cases the 'other' factors with a larger machine actually slow you down. With ground engaging work, yes, size matters, but so does manueverability and compact size to fit in small spots or not cause more compaction than is necessary.

Likewise, a big machine has more grunt to run a bigger bush-hog, but it also bounces more on rough ground, and uses a LOT more fuel to do it.

Again, IMHO, a 50hp machine, running a 6' bush-hog, will roll along at almost the same speed as your 25hp machine will today with a 5' cutter out back. It will cut a wider swath, but only by a foot, if you look at it from a "per pass" basis, it means you will make 6 passes instead of 7 to cut the same area. The savings will be certainly be almost eaten up by the extra machine and operating costs.

If you need a bigger machine for earth work, so be it, but IMHO, a 40hp class machine (with 4wd) will do eveything you need to do, and at a lot less expense.

The step up from 40 to 50 hp is a pretty spendy step.

Best of luck. ....

Murf,
Thanks for the input, you make some very sound points. I have noticed the price jump from the 40hp range to the 50hp range. The compact size of the L2800 has been a plus up to this point. Thanks again,
Toby ....

A lot of companies around here either rent or lease equipement and that is something you may find good for those larger jobs or to be sure on the size of a machine before you put down the real money. Most any machine is both too large and too small for all jobs. kt ....

kt,
I'm finding that to be the case. Regardless of what you've got you seem to need something else. Thanks,
TP ....
